"Originally a Picon specialist design, the Ranger class cruiser has more recently become popular throughout the Twelve Colonies. Its combination of long-range dominance and skirmish-range turret configuration makes it a highly effective all-rounder in any strike group."

Overview

Although not particularly strong, turrets on the ranger are well distributed, being mounted on the sides, the front and below (which can hit targets in any direction below the ship). This, combined with good maneuverability, makes the class a good skirmisher. Roam around the battlefield chasing down enemies rather than lining up broadsides, and unleash regular barrages of missiles.

Strategies

Use Skirmish Tactics

The light turrets mounted on the side of the Ranger are not particularly strong, so unlike other classes you don't need to worry about lining up broadsides. Rather make use of your forward and bottom turrets (which can attack in all directions below the ship) to chase and finish off opponents, or quickly move in to protect your other ships.

Attack From Above

If roaming around the battlefield, try to attack from above. This will allow enemies to be targeted by your bottom medium turrets.

Hit and Run

Compared with similar ships the Ranger has relatively weak armor. In addition to this, it also has a tendency to be focused by the AI. Pay attention to your armor and disengage if you need to, using your good maneuverability to move to a safer location and shield damaged armor from enemies. It's not uncommon for a Ranger to be heavily damaged or even destroyed in a single round, so consider moving away as soon as you start getting focused.

Missiles and Nukes - Main Threat

Remember your main utility is from missile. You have two munitions slots, with a reduced cooldown (2 turns) compared with other colonial units. Try to keep your Ranger alive, even if you have to pull it completely out of the fight and away from any other units, it can still sit at a distance and send in missiles every other turn.
